Facts About Special Olympics, New Hanover County
- In New Hanover County there are currently over 600 Special Olympic Athletes
- 100 % of all Polar Plunge and other donations directly support the New Hanover County Special Olympics program
- New Hanover County provides training and competition in the following sports: Athletics, Basketball, Softball, Bowling, Bocce, Golf, Power Lifting, Roller Skating, Soccer, Swimming and Tennis
- New Hanover County provides quality training and competition on a local, regional, state and national level
- Special Olympics New Hanover County also offers opportunities for athletes, families, friends and the community to unite through socials, summer camps and quarterly dances
New Hanover County Special Olympics Highlights:
- The New Hanover County Special Olympic Softball team attended the National Games in Ames, Iowa in July 2006 and win a Silver Medal
- In 2005, we successfully implemented a Unified Softball team with the City Of Wilmington, NC Recreation League, and will do so again in 2007
- Jonathan Batts, our local New Hanover County Special Olympic Coordinator was awarded the 2005 Special Olympic North Carolina Coordinator of The Year
- The Summer of 2007 saw the start of Camp Shriver New Hanover County with over 100 campers in three one week camps
- Kent Blue attends the World Games in China as a Bocce athlete
- Mark Gradeless wins Gold at National Golf Invitational in Port St. Lucie, Florida
- We conducted our 4th Polar Plunge in Carolina Beach on Feb. 16, 2008 to support Special Olympics New Hanover County
- Camp Shriver 2008 wraps-up it second summer of fun and games with over 130 campers attending
