VOLUNTEERS

The Lifeblood of Special Olympic North Carolina

At the heart of the continuing growth and success of the Special Olympics movement are thousands of volunteers, because Special Olympics is a program of people helping people. These volunteers come from all strata of society: celebrities and sports stars, high school and college groups, service clubs, teachers, parents and businesses, all working together to make Special Olympics a dynamic and exciting program.

Volunteer opportunities include:

    • coaching and training athletes,

    • partnering with an athlete on a unified sports,

    • serving as a buddy, or

    • volunteer to help at one event.

Special Olympics Unified Sports® is an initiative that combines approximately equal numbers of Special Olympics athletes and athletes without intellectual disabilities (called Partners) on sports teams for training and competition. Age and ability matching of athletes and Partners is defined on a sport-by-sport basis. Unified Sports in our area include bocce, bowling, golf, and tennis.
