Welcome To Special Olympics New Hanover County

    Special Olympics New Hanover County supports more than 500 athletes with Intellectual Disabilities in year-round training programs in 11 different sports and competing in local, regional and state-level events. Special Olympics New Hanover County partners with Wilmington Parks and Recreation for use of facilities and equipment. Our offices are located at 302 Willard Street in Downtown Wilmington, North Carolina. Please see the contact page for more information.

    The 9th Annual Polar Plunge and the first 5K Run-N-Plunge were held on February 23, 2013 at the boardwalk in Carolina Beach. For the Run, we had a total of 122 runners to line-up and take the starters gun. Oh, did I mention that it was a torrential downpour and about 50 degrees? After the run and some great music from several bands, a great raffle and a hilarious costume contest with the following winners, Lindley Habilitation taking large group, Mason and the Finettes  getting small group honors (way to go Kevin and Amber), and Katherine W getting individual costume honors.

To finish the day, we had 296 brave and wonderfully people and some pooches too that took the Plunge in a brisk 52 degrees and with a water temp of 50 degrees.

Special Olympics New Hanover County wishes to thank all of the volunteer, sponsors, runners and those brave plungers for making this a very successful event. On June 1 and June 2, our Softball Team, Swim Team and Gymnastics Team competed at the Special Olympics North Carolina Summer Games in Raleigh, NC. We had great fun and won a few medals along the way. I will give a complete count of the medal and put some game pictures up soon. If you see one of our summer game athletes, give them a big congratulations for a job well done.
